Water pollution is the second main cause of global water problems. The
definition of pollution is “to make foul or unclean; dirty.” Usually, water
pollution occurs when large amounts of a material are added to or dumped in
water. In general, there are two main sources of water pollution. The first
source is direct. Direct sources of water pollution include effluent
outfalls from factories, refineries, and waste treatment plants.
The second source of
water pollution is indirect. Indirect sources of water pollution include
contaminants that enter water supplies from soils/underground systems and
from the atmosphere via rain water. Both direct and indirect sources of
water pollution have a huge negative impact on the society.
Problems associated with water pollution are numerous. The first main
problem that pollution can cause is poisonous drinking water. Industrial
wastes, which are usually dumped in rivers and lakes, contain a lot of toxic
and poisonous components. Those components do not only degrade the quality
of water, but they also poison it. When large amounts of toxic materials are
dumped into water, this water will become poisonous and unsuitable for human
use. In case humans use this water, they’ll certainly encounter diseases
such as Typhoid and Dysentery. At certain occasions, they might encounter
what is even worse than theses diseases, what is meant here is death. The
second main problem that pollution can cause is partially or completely
destroying the ecosystems found in water.
Destroying
ecosystems leads into damaging the food chain found in water. It also leads
into poisoning people indirectly. This happens when people eat fish that
were poisoned as a result of the toxic materials dumped into the water. |
